Wire E.D.M.

Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) for Intricate Parts

Precision wire EDM component from Skillcraft Machine Tool Co.

Skillcraft’s wire electrical discharge machining (wire EDM) capabilities allow us to produce complex, high-precision parts that traditional machining can’t touch. Using controlled electrical sparks instead of cutting tools, this advanced process delivers clean, accurate results, especially for hard, delicate, or highly detailed components.

Wire EDM is ideal for cutting fine features, tight internal radii, and specialty materials without mechanical stress. From prototype tooling to critical defense components, our team combines experience and equipment to meet exacting requirements with confidence.

Wire EDM for Tooling and Custom Components

As a trusted partner for wire EDM machining, Skillcraft helps OEMs and Tier suppliers meet demanding specifications with confidence. Our capabilities are well-suited for:

Precision Tooling & Fixtures

Intricate components used in jigs, dies, and high-tolerance tooling applications.

Prototypes & Low-Volume Production

Custom, one-off parts or small batches requiring extremely precise detailing.

No Heat-Affected Zones (HAZ)

Since the wire doesn’t physically touch the part, there is no warping or residual stress.

Hard-to-Machine Materials

Wire EDM is ideal for hardened materials like steels, carbide, Inconel, and titanium alloys.

Our AS9100-compliant process, combined with expert setup and programming, ensures that every part we cut meets the most exacting standards for aerospace, defense, energy, and industrial applications.

What is Wire EDM?

Wire EDM — also known as spark eroding, spark machining, wire erosion, and wire burning — utilizes electrical discharges and metal wire to shape and cut metal. This thermal cutting process uses a thin, electrically charged wire to erode metal with no direct contact. The wire is guided through the workpiece along a programmed path, discharging electrical sparks to vaporize material with exceptional precision.

At Skillcraft, the wire is submerged in deionized water, which cools the material and flushes away particles as the spark removes metal. This process allows us to cut hardened materials, tight corners, intricate cavities, and fragile sections without introducing mechanical stress or deformation.

Wire EDM is ideal for:

  • Ultra-tight tolerances
  • Shaping hard or brittle materials (i.e tool steels, Inconel, titanium)
  • Sharp internal corners and complex contours
  • Thin-walled, delicate, or heat-sensitive parts

Compared to plasma, laser, or flame cutting, wire EDM delivers greater precision and surface quality, making it a valuable tool in critical applications.

Purpose-Built for Precision Wire Electrical Discharge Machining

Skillcraft uses advanced wire EDM technology to produce detailed, tight-tolerance components with exceptional consistency. Our SoDICK VZ300L machine offers a maximum work envelope of 30.7” x 22.4” x 8.4”, giving us the flexibility to cut both small, intricate features and larger plate-style parts with clean edges and minimal post-processing.

This precision equipment, paired with the expertise of our skilled operators, allows us to machine hardened alloys, delicate geometries, and specialty tooling with control and confidence, supporting the high standards required in diverse applications.
